Born on July 22, 1992 in Grand Prairie, Texas, actress and singer Selena Gomez is the daughter of former stage actress Mandy Teefey (née Cornett) and Ricardo Joel Gomez. When they divorced, she was raised by her mother, who later remarried. Her interest in acting surfaced when she saw her mother prepare for theatre productions, leading her to start her own career. She was seven years old when she starred on Barney & Friends.
Since then, Selena Gomez appeared on shows like the TV film Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial By Fire. She began working with the Disney Channel in 2004, making her way into The Suite Life of Zack & Cody as a guest star. She was later seen on two seasons of Hannah Montana before she landed the lead role of Alex Russo in the Disney Channel series, Wizards of Waverly Place. She reprised her role in Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.
She also had a number of roles in film. These include those in the direct-to-DVD movie Another Cinderella Story and on Princess Protection Program. As for her music career, she formed the teen pop band called Selena Gomez & the Scene in 2009. Their debut studio album is called Kiss & Tell, which was followed by A Year Without Rain in 2010.
Selena Gomez is also involved in several philanthropic projects. She was named UNICEF's spokesperson for the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign in 2008 and became the youngest UNICEF ambassador to be elected in 2009. She has also launched her own production company called July Moon Productions, in addition to her own fashion line known as "Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez."

Now Justin Bieber takes Selena Gomez home
They may be teenagers, but Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's romance is quickly getting serious.
The 17-year-old teen heartthrob took his Disney star girlfriend, 18, back to his hometown in Canada to meet his loved ones.
The couple were seen enjoying lunch at the Swiss Chalet in Toronto for lunch with friends and family followed by ice cream.
Earlier this week, they also joined Justin's half-siblings, Jazmyn and Jaxon, and his father, Jeremy, for a Memorial Day picnic.
They certainly seem to be enjoying their stay and yesterday a fan tweeted a picture Bieber giving his love a foot massage.
Their trip to Canada comes just a week after the pair enjoyed a romantic - and very grown up - holiday in Hawaii.
They were seen cavorting around the beach together and put on a very passionate display as they frolicked in the sea.
The affectionate show triggered a slew of death threats from some of Bieber's fans.
'Stay away from Justin paedophile,' one angry fan wrote on Twitter.
'I'm gonna kill ya in the night underneath your smell bed.'
Another sent the message:' Selena Gomez is dangerously close to a long, slow painful death.'
Gomez first incurred the wrath of Bieber fans, known as Belibers, after she and the singer went public with their romance.
Bieber's huge fan base on Twitter and Facebook helped him be named as the third most powerful entertainer in the world.
The Canadian born singer has nine million followers on Twitter and a YouTube video of his hit 'baby' has been viewed more than 500 million times.

With another year's show come and gone, the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards offered up plenty of action while honoring the best in the music business.
The big winners at the Nokia Theatre LA Live show on Sunday night (August 28) included Katy Perry as Video of the Year honoree for "Firework" while Lady Gaga nabbed Best Female Video for "Born This Way" and Justin Bieber's "U Smile" took home the Moonman for Best Male Video.
Meanwhile, Britney Spears and the late Amy Winehouse received special tributes while performers included show opener Lady GaGa, as well as Beyonce Knowles, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Jay-Z with Kanye West, and Adele.

It's easy to forget, considering her success, but Selena Gomez is only 19 years old.
The singer emphasized this point in a recent interview with Glamour, when asked how she reacts to backlash against her for dating a certain popular male singer.
"I feel like everything that I’m doing right now should not be taken too seriously," Selena told the magazine. "I should be able to have fun and enjoy where I’m at! So I don’t want to spend my time hiding or worrying about all of that."
Among other topics the artist touched on: rejection, Hollywood and her social media presence. Read on for excerpts.
On handling rejection: When I was 11 years old, I had a grown woman who was a casting director tell me I was not strong enough to carry the lead in any project. Now I’m doing things that I love, and I’m working really hard. I never want to play the victim or anything, but of course everybody deals with it.
On being young in Hollywood: You have this pressure to fit in and you want people to like you. I try my best to be a good person and be the best I can be.
On Facebook and Twitter: I love that I can stay connected with my fans and be able to tell them what’s going on. Their opinions are so important to me. But at the same time, it’s very weird. I think the Internet can be a great thing but also really evil. Something can instantly hurt your feelings.

Selena Gomez is a singer and actress. She started her career when she was seven years old. She starred on the children’s public television show, “Barney and Friends.”
